When many people think about Amsterdam, their minds immediately go to marijuana, prostitution, and an ultra-tolerant atmosphere regarding controlled substances. However, Amsterdam is about so much more than that. Whether you’re looking for history, natural beauty, great food, or beautiful old-world architecture, you can find it all in and around Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is a city with a number of historical buildings, monuments and museums that attract the attention of the tourists from far and wide. Its various canals itself add to its beauty. The theaters, gardens, parks, markets and art galleries are the other places of interest in the city that are must to visit.

As a European cultural center, there are tons of museums and monuments to visit throughout Amsterdam. These museums range from high artistic culture to more pop culture elements like the museums devoted to the history of pornography, vodka, cannabis, and ladies’ handbags. Check out the Rijksmuseum, with one of the largest collections of Dutch Golden Age paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Steen. The Van Gogh museum, with many of the painters’ famous works like Starry Night and Sunflowers, is not to be missed. These, along with the Stedeljik museum of Modern art and the Diamond museum detailing the history of the jewelry trade in Amsterdam, line a park in South Amsterdam known as Museum Park.

Museum-goers visiting Amsterdam can find a great deal in the “Museum Jaarkaart.” For only 40 euros (22.75 if you’re under 25), this card gives you immediate access to any of the four hundred museums in Amsterdam. As entries typically cost close to 10 euros a pop, your card can easily pay for itself. It lasts for a year from the date of purchase, so depending on how many long weekends you want to spend in Amsterdam, you can save a tremendous amount of money.
The architecture in Amsterdam is not to be missed. Whether you’re looking at majestic old stone windmills like De Jonge Dikkert, turned into a restaurant in South Amsterdam, or you’re in front of a hotel in Amsterdam, or whether you’re simply walking down the street admiring the quaint, novel arches and brightly colored trimwork, each view is a new treat.

Amsterdam’s Plantage neighborhood is specifically dedicated to the beautiful greenery. Tours around the Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, only cost 6 Euros. If you visit it around this time (springtime), there will be impressive displays that include those amazing tulips for which Holland is famous. But don’t think that’s all.

The Hortus is home to over six thousand trees and plants from all over the world, arranged around lakes and winding paths to make it feel as though you’re walking through a global display of flowering beauty. If tulips are your thing, you can also visit Keukenhoff Gardens in Lisse just west of the city. With over seven million bulbs planted annually, from tiny scarlets to extravagantly frilled yellows and violets, this is truly the place to go if you want to “tiptoe through the tulips.”
